Good news :Gadag - hotgi double electrification work likely to start from Jan 2019 & expected to complete by March 2020 as per this report ..

For long distance, passenger train is better tham DEMU/MEMU. Generally upto 100 kms running memu is feasible. But dont know whether it can run in this route or not.
