What's the difference b/w an Humsafar train and now discontinued Garib Rath trains except for the fact that latter had third AC economy instead of normal third AC? And why not remove both categories and just run these trains as "AC Express", having a proper nomenclature instead of inventing a new name for each rail minister?

NF side doesn't have many trains to begin with, nor does it have many airports, so people have to make do with whatever they have. As such, irrespective of schedule, trains from that side get decent response.
This is not true for areas like mumbai, patna, howrah, nagpur etc

Ideally, they ought to replace garib Rath with humsafar, some of the GR like RNC GR, BDTS GR (both), MAS GR etc have tremendous response, and a significant chunk of it will translate to the humsafar too (though not complete, some will be pushed away due to higher rates).
Once the 'brand' of hunsafar starts building as reliable, superfast trains with excellent dep/arr times, people will flock to it.
Humsafar as it runs today is mostly going to be third or fourth choice on key routes between cities as loads of competing trains...

Give it a decade or so. Some new rail minister will come up with his own 'brand' of a train and put Humsafar into 'suffer' category.
