The energy consumption, and somewhat ironically, the cost if operation of passenger train that stops everywhere is actually higher than that of rajdhani.
For instance, mumbai rajdhani has an SEC of around 16 units per 1000 gtkm. This means, on average, across its trip to Delhi, the train needs 16 units of electricity to haul 1000 tons by 1 km. and indeed everywhere else. These everywhere stopping trains have a higher cost of operations than the ones with fewer stops, and yet when railway complies to their demand rather than following the rules people try to save few more rupees by not purchasing tickets at all!!!
It's no wonder IR is so reluctant to give halt to trains nowadays.
