The Lost Glory of a prestigious train... The Bygone Era of Superfast Service between Tatanagar & Patna

Presenting the comparison of Timetables of different years of Tatanagar-Patna-Danapur Express straight from the inaugural year 1984 to 2023.

as a Superfast service 83/84 between Tatanagar and Patna, it used to run 6 days a week except Fridays with a single rake only. This train of that era gives a tough fight to the Shatabdi services of this era. An average of 62/57 was a prestigious matter. This train was renumbered to 8183/8184 from 1989. More or less, the same Timetable prevailed till 1993. Also, the remaining day (Friday) was used up by 179/180 Tatanagar Varanasi Tatanagar Express on a little slower slot but same route.

Slowly-slowly, halts added, time of run added, speed subtracted. In 1994, the frequency was reduced to 2 days a week, on Sundays and Mondays. Number changed to 8683/8684 (sources claim this to be 2883/2884 as well), speed reduced and diverted via Adra. Now 2 reversals as well as 2 rakes were required.

The biggest shock for this train came in about late 1990s, where a journey of nearly 9 hrs was made 11 hrs. 8183/8184 was extended to Danapur from Patna. A completely new, comparatively slow slot was worked out. Still, this was running via Adra upto late 2000s or early 2010s. Thereafter, was restored on the original route via Joychandi Pahar, hence a little late departure from Tatanagar.

This train has undergone a lot changes despite being on a single gauge from nearly 39 years. Comparatively more than what most BG trains undergo. Still, the popularity of this train has not been affected. It was, and still remains a very popular choice for frequent as well as occasional travellers.

I actually never understood why this was diverted via Adra when a mainline station, JOC was already in place. Same plugin plugout game was played with South Bihar Express. This hampered both the speed of the train and traffic on BNR mainline (now SINI-ASN).

Today, all superfast services between TATA -ASN have been retired to Mail/Express category after addition of unbreathable freight traffic. 22843/44 is SF by it's balance performance in other sections.
13511/12 still somedays cover the distance in 3 hrs 20 mins, but those old day aggression is missing.

13511/12 and Asansol - Haldia express both have excessive halts in my opinion.
