Delhi to Lucknow

Only 2 trains were in the competition, basically because only they had seats available, the exclusive Tejas and the dribbling Double Decker which I chose. It started from ANVT and had quite some seats empty from there [ many people boarded from Moradabad instead ]. I had a level seat at front [ neither in lower deck nor upper, so the true experience of traveling in a DD was missed ] but the people, wow. Atleast two folks decided to make their seat a sleeping one by keeping legs

onto the headrest of my seat instead, protruding onto my head, when sitting. The sunroof was lowered on the window panes, so instead of lounging on the window seat, I went and stood by the door. The train literally crawled upto GZB, where at a point, there was a four way parallel/anti-parallel action.

I footplated all the way upto Moradabad. This section had some speed limits, though some sights like the train curving on the Ganga at Garmukhteshwar Bridge were good [ the British era bridge apparently was even curving, but it has been demolished now]. After Moradabad, the train became a passenger and stopped atleast ten times before hitting Bareily an hour late. It did some mps action later, though most folks around me were engrossed in the India cricket match at that time. It arrived at LKO Outer Alamnagar at 1145 hrs. Do note that the Tejas which starts 1.5 hrs later from NDLS had already reached by now. By now, another train trailing us ANVT-Danapur Express also came and stood on next platform. Both trains remained standing until the LJN-Kathgodam express could roll out. After that, we expected our train to move, but nope. The Danapur bound train that goes to LKO NR got the yellow signal. I just took my carry bag and jumped ship. That train started and stopped couple of times before ultimately rolling into LKO NR half an hour later. En route, I saw the Chandigarh bound LJN-CDG Express which was crowding the tracks and stopping the Double Decker from going there.

Oh, and this is where you shouldn't trust third party apps like Where is My Train or even NTES data always. The former showed that Double Decker had reached LJN at 0030 hrs which was impossible because it didn't overtook the Danapur Express in between and the literal single line to LJN was occupied by another train. Only at late next morning, did NTES data was fixed and it showed the arrival time of DD to be post 1 am.

The Double Decker has shitty seats, is not given priority much and has even worse timings if going from Lucknow to Delhi. Shatabdi or Tejas are better alternatives. Hopefully a Vande Bharat will run soon since Shatabdi too has been slowed down over the years. Heck, choose Gomti Chair Car over this train because those atleast would have more leg space than this cramped version [plus starting from main NDLS station instead of peripheral ANVT].

Agree
I guess due to the fact that humongous amounts of trains go through/start from Lucknow for Delhi that few people have the patience to travel 500 km in a double decker. It doesn't help that they run it via a slower route [ BE-MB] and has shitty timings [ before 5 AM starting time, worse than Gomti Express ].

If extended it will destroy Dec JP DD timings which are very convenient after office hours at Delhi. The main problem is timings it should leave Lucknow at 545/600 to reach by 1330/1345 Return should arrive by 2200 and should run 6 days a week. DD seats are cramped and difficult to sit beyond 6 hrs with no recline angle. If the seat are replaced with normal ACC seats one 1 row decreased in top and bottom deck with 110 seats in place of 120 seats comfort will increase.

failure of DD, Coach factory at Kapartula is designing and manufacturing 2 rakes of 20 coaches DD rakes with sitting top compartment and cargo in lower compartment. Each coach will have 46 seats.

Its a slowish DD on a route which is anyhow known for poor controlling. Had it been punctual with an aggressive TT of like 7 hours with LKO departure between 5.30-6 AM, it would have had been much more popular. Tejas departs at 6 and reaches 45 minutes earlier.

Yes the timings are the main issue... route has the potential .. TT should be made more aggressive and Travel time should be reduced.. focus should be made to earn as much from the intermediate stations..
