Yes dropped as few other zones had raised concerns of path constraints....it would have been a good option to cater to the migrant workforce.
Agree with change in timings for Mettupalayam Tuticorin. Depending on the patronage (this train would soon be made a daily) another late night service could eventually be introduced between Coimbatore and Rameswaram with timings suitable to Madurai passengers.
Mangalore Rameswaram on the other hand has a good schedule and would work as a nice connecting train option for 16586.

TN MTP can start 60 to 90 minutes early and reach MDU by 2330 CBE by 0500 MTP 0600.
