FalaknumaSF~ 4414 blog postsI've seen that the train boards mostly have Mangaluru in the name but the train announcements all throughout kerala refer to it as Mangalapuram. Can it be a local name for the city? It isn't official but many people do refer to it as Mangalapuram. What is the origin of this name?

They should make these names more popular is what I'm insisting. Alleppey or Allapuzha becomes Allapujha in pronunciation in some states. With name changing going on all around the country, even Hyderabad is referred to as Bhagyanagaram by many and many have insisted on changing the name. People say it is cultural reasons as the city is named after Hyder after one of the nizam kings but it is actually the name of one of the kings lover, Hyder Mahal, who was formerly called Bagmati(hence Bhagyanagaram - the city of luck). I prefer Hyderabad but the other names should be popularized. Same case with Kovai ( Coimbatore) , Kolkata is referred to as Kalakattha while pronuncing in Telugu, even Kannada , Malayalam I think. Rajamundry/Rajamahendravaram, Visakhapatnam/Vizag/Waltair. So many examples. Popularizing these will help in many ways.
