Coal theft from trains on rise
Chandbali, Jan 1: Theft of coal from moving goods trains on
...
Bhadrak-Dhamra railway line by the villagers has put the administration on its toes.
It is alleged villagers of Manipur, Nuasahi, Subhadia, Biriharpur, Jantuali and Sankhajodi under Chandbali block in Bhadrak district are looting coal from the wagons using hooks or batons. They collect the material as soon as blocs of coal fall on the side of the tracks.
Interestingly, a good number of students have resorted to such unfair practice of stealing coal from the wagons as they make a quick buck by selling the stuff to households and brick kiln owners. They sell a kg of coal for Rs 4 which is very cheap for the buyers.
Smoke belching chimneys has become a common sight in the villages as most of the households use coal for cooking. Villagers said to lessen the thickness of smoke, they mix up coal dust with cow dung and dry up in the sun for a relatively less smoky atmosphere.
Sources said, the Bansada police had rounded up a person who had piled up coal after stealing it from moving train wagons. But, this has not discouraged others as no police patrolling is done all along the vulnerable sections of Bhadrak-Dhamra railway line. If such thefts are not contained immediately then no one knows when train accidents will occur, sources added. PNN
