I have booked three tickets each for two dates one for 14-05-2013 from NDLS to TCR which is a confirmed ticket and another for 18-05-2013 in Waiting List. The ticket charge was Rs. 4821 without their commission of Rs. 20.
I cancelled both these tickets on same day and IRCTC has credited Rs. 4626/- in confirmed ticket and Rs. 4746/- in Waiting Listed second ticket. In both tickets Rs. 175/- was service tax. In first ticket Rs. 195/- was deducted and in second ticket Rs. 75 was deducted.

For CNF tickets in 3AC cancellation charges is Rs 60 per passenger
For WL tickets in 3AC cancellation charges is Rs 20 per passenger
If a AC ticket is cancelled Rs 5 per passenger from service tax is deducted and other is refunded.
So for CNF tickets Rs 195 (65 x 3) was deducted.

Any idea why Rs 5 is deducted from the service tax? Is Rs 5 irrespective of the value of the tickets? across AC1, 2 and 3?
It is Rs. 171/- not 175/- as mentioned by me in my earlier posts. At the time of introduction of Service Tax in railway booking I have heard that the Service Tax portion will not be refunded by the Railway at the time of cancellation and we have to file separately with Service Tax department for the refund like in the case of TDS. From this it got cleared that Service also refunded after deducting Rs. 5/- per booked ticket, balance amount get credited in the bank.
No sir.. the theory is cancellation charges of Rs.60 will attract service tax at 3.708%, this comes to 2.22, i think they have rounded it off to next 5 rupees..
But theory is this only service tax is applicable on cancellation charges
