The ongoing Metro projects in Kolkata might have been stuck in the ‘land’ quagmire. But that has not deterred RITES, the railways PSU, from carrying out surveys on 13 routes other than the ongoing projects. However, RITES officials point out that the state government must be pro-active in untangling the knots that have often become stumbling blocks for the Metro projects.
The 13 new routes being studied along with the existing and those planned or under construction together cover 329km — bigger than any underground network in the world. However, some alignments have overlapped with the existing suburban railway alignment, leaving questions on their justification.
