CHENNAI: The Cardamom Express between Madurai and Bodinayakkanur is set to resume services by April next year.Gauge conversion along a 37km stretch from Madurai to Usilampatti has been completed and the remaining 53km stretch is expected to be ready before March 2020, said a senior railway official. The last service on the route was stopped in December 2011 but, sanction for gauge conversion was approved only in the 2016-17 financial year, said the official.Officials plan to call the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) for an inspection of the newly-laid broad-gauge tracks on the 37km stretch. “That is expected to be done by next month end. This is mainly due to rebuilding of railway stations along the stretch,” the official said.Civil work at Vadapazanchi railway station, the first station on the Madurai-Bodinayakkanur route, is on in full swing and is likely to be completed soon, said another official.Asked about the gauge conversion work...

from Usilampatti to Bodinayakkanur, the official said the work was in progress. A total of Rs 450crore has been earmarked for the 90km stretch. “Operation of trains on the stretch is expected to be resumed by March as a Tamil New Year bonus for the people of Bodinayakkanur,” he said.Already, a section of people in the Nagamalai Pudukottai area has begun demanding the setting up of a railway station in Palkalai Nagar to facilitate free movement of people residing in the surrounding areas, said a railway source. “If this issue is raised, the operation of the train services may get further delayed,” he said. However, things may not be as smooth as they appear, officials fear. People from areas along the route have also begun demanding the setting up of manned level crossing gates in certain places and construction of rail under-bridges in other areas. All these tricky issues have to be addressed before the train service along the route can be resumed, the official said. This is the longest stretch in the state that is being converted from metre gauge to broad gauge. There are a few smaller stretches in the Cauvery delta region, which are yet to be converted into broad gauge, he added.
