The Naganahalli Railway Terminus which is critical to handling additional trains to and from Mysuru is set for a derailment due to delay in the land acquisition process.
Though the project was envisaged to be completed by 2024 and included as a priority project by the Railway Board, the work is yet to get started.

Mysuru-Bengaluru section will not materialise.
In the interim, the Railway Board has sanctioned the yard remodeling of the Ashokapuram Railway Station to create additional stabling lines so as to overcome capacity constraints of Mysuru station. It will be taken up at a cost of ₹15.71 crore.
There is also a proposal for additional stabling line at Belagola on the outskirts of the city where some of the long distance trains can be shunted once their primary or secondary maintenance have been completed at the pit lines in Mysuru.
However, Naganahalli Terminus is critical for the long-term growth and development of the railways and the local economy. Though Mysuru MP Pratap Simha has sought funds to get the projected started, the key issue is land acquisition which is entirely in the domain of the State Government.
The railway authorities have sent reminders to the State Government on the imperatives of expediting the land acquisition exercise, but there reminders have been greeted by silence.
Sources said the project could be frozen and put in the backburner in case the uncertainty prolonged. Railway officials in their letter to the State Government have stated that apart from introduction of new trains and improving connectivity to and from Mysuru, the project will also help in the socio-economic development of the region.
The project will cost ₹494.79 crore in the first phase and the Railway Board on its part had sanctioned ₹19.99 crore for the financial year 2021-22 in anticipation of cost sharing by the State Government.
The project requires 165 acres of land in the first phase during which four platforms, four pit lines and 8 stabling lines is envisaged. The second phase was expected to see the construction of another two platforms all of which would complement the existing six platforms in Mysuru city.
The project was originally mooted in 2007-08 and received administrative nod in 2018 with the timeline for completion set for 2024. But the onset of the pandemic and the financial constraints of the State Government may not see the project materializing in the near future.

So, Naganahalli terminal is for handling trains dumped by Bangalore!!.
Why don't they dump those trains to any locations in their division- like Hosur, Dharmapuri, Bangarapet, Tumkur? Why only Mysore?
As it is, Mysore is not getting any new line towards Kerala. All such dumped trains add more problems for Mysore for introducing new trains to cater to needs of Mysore.

MYS KCG extension is ok, but Basava or KCVL express and their timings are not ok. Are they extended to cater to Mysore or to free up platforms in Bangalore? Even MYS BSB or MYS SNSI are not for Mysore.
If railways care for Mysore, they should extend BIDAR YPR, and Brindavan to Mysore.
Anyway , KSK via KCG is spoiled. Why can't it run from YPR via MYS HAS UBL BAY KCG?!?

Madikeri: The Karnataka High Court will on Aug.20, hear the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) Petition against the proposed Railway lines that cuts through Kodagu and the expansion of Highways inside the district. The PIL (WP 17990/2018) was filed on 24.4.2018 by the then President of Coorg Wildlife Society Col. (retd.) C.P. Muthanna, who is also the Coordinator, Save Kodagu and Cauvery Campaign. 
Speaking to Star of Mysore this morning, Muthanna said that the PIL will come up before the Court on Aug.20 before a Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka. The respondents in the petition are Secretary, Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology, Ministry of Railways, Chief Secretaries of Karnataka and Kerala and Principal Chief Conservators of Forests, Karnataka

In his petition, Muthanna stated that the construction of two lines — one linking Thalassery in Kerala with Mysuru via Kodagu district and another linking Mysuru, Kushalnagar and Madikeri — will have disastrous consequences.
The petitioner contended that the said Railway line is also interconnected to Thalassery-Mysuru Railway Line project which shall connect and interconnect Karnataka and Kerala at the cost of severe damage to flora and fauna of Kodagu district. The Coorg Wildlife Society has prayed the Court not to permit any such projects, either in the name of tourism or for commercial purposes.
It may be recalled here that the petition had come up for hearing on July 25 last year where the State Government advocate had claimed that Karnataka is not taking up the projects. The advocate said that the PIL was premature as the Government has not taken up any such Railway projects nor it intends to do so. He argued that no decision or discussion has taken place between the Governments of Kerala and Karnataka on the Railway projects.
However, the advocate for the petitioner told the Court that there were several documents obtained through RTI to prove that the work on the Railway lines was on and Karnataka has in principle agreed for the same. Considering the documentary evidence from the petitioner’s side, the HC considered the same as ‘Cause of Action’ and had directed the Government’s advocate to produce documentary evidence to prove that Karnataka Govt. has not initiated any work on the projects.
Regarding another PIL filed by Coorg Wildlife Society against the State Government’s proposal to widen the Highway between Mysuru and Mangaluru via the green land in Kushalnagar, Suntikoppa, Madikeri and Sampaje, the Court ruled that for implementing any project like this, the Dept. concerned should mandatorily obtain clearance and sanctions from all necessary offices and Departments and also conduct a feasibility study of the project implementation. Both the PILs will come up for hearing on Aug.20.

In this particular case, destruction would be at much wider scale then that you are guessing.
Have a look on the route proposed and the topography of that region
Still, then also more than railways, major destruction is caused by insensitive tourists coming from other places using the rail network.
That's why said above , that railways is not to be blamed directly

I agree that the problem is caused more by the tourists. I too think that the government should change the proposed route to avoid the main wild life areas. But I feel a railway is necessary to reduce the problems being caused by the road traffic.
Nothing is going to stop tourists from visiting the place. Within a span of 8 years, the number of tourists here, just from Bangalore alone, has increased many fold. And it's not going to reduce. More and more people are traveling here by cars, buses and tempo travelers.

whether or not the railway line is constructed, the tourist traffic will increase. In this context, the road vs rail argument should be addressed.
Consider the traffic through the Nagarhole national park. Everyday, there are hundreds of vehicles passing through this park by the highway. This causes a lot of disturbance to wildlife.
In the late 90's, there used to be little traffic in the region (Nagarhole, Bandipur and adjoining areas). Other than the wildlife centers, there used to be little to no human presence in the area. It was very common to see animals crossing the roads in the day time.
Now, there are roadside dhabas, settlements every few kilometers and for the most part, animals don't even dare to come near the roads in the day time. The human-animal conflict is also increasing now as animal movement is extremely restricted during the day time.
A railway line will help in reducing the road traffic, which is the main culprit in reducing forest cover ( More and more buildings are constructed beside the roads, leading to loss of forest cover) and causing harm to wildlife.
A single train running through the national park can replace hundreds of road vehicles. Instead of several hundred vehicles constantly passing through the forest, just two trains ( one in each direction) can do the job. This will have far lesser environmental impact (less disturbance to wildlife, lesser pollution) than the road traffic. Even in terms of goods traffic, a single goods trains can replace at least 50-60 lorries.
We cannot avoid tourists and freight traffic through this region. It will only increase. So, we just have to pick the option with the least impact possible, and a railway line will have extrmely small impact compared to roads and highways.

yes ,either way destruction is inevitable. sooner or later road and rail path sideways up to half km on either sides will get encroached by locals, what ever they opt for
so, lets see which way they want to move on.

I totally agree. If British had thought like this then Castle rock -- Vasco tracks would have not been laid. Comon why we are not moving ahead. In Karnataka hubli -- Ankola line and Kodagu line is pending from quite some time.

Yes, we need to move ahead but with a lot more caution and taking all aspects into account , not just the development aspect.
As times are more challenging than ever, when londa- Mao route was built forest cover in Karnataka was around 55% , today its less than 21%. Discipline was so tidy in British era that if one throw a garbage can on road were beaten by hunter, now a days throwing coca cola can on road is fashion st.

The Union government has approved new rail lines between Mysuru (Belagola) and Kodagu, and Alur and Belur in Hassan district.
The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned Rs 1,855 crore for the 87-km new line between Belagola in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district, and Kushalnagar in Somwarpet of Kodagu district.The government has earmarked Rs 463 crore for new Alur-Belur railway line.
With this, Kodagu district will be getting the train connectivity and it will be beneficial for the people of Mysuru, Periyapatna, Bylakuppe and Kushalnagar.

The project was delayed as environmentalists were against it, expressing concern that the rail route passing through Kodagu district may have an adverse impact on the flora and fauna.
A survey had been conducted in 2011 for a rail route between Mysuru and Kushalnagar. But, the plan was dropped as it was considered to be not profitable. Now, the Railways has given an official nod and the works will commence soon.

RAILWAY BUDGET: A FIRST REACTION
The Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has presented his first Railway Budget. The budget differs from previous ones. It also does not take the populist route of announcing hundreds of new trains. It focusses on the vision Prabhu has for Indian Railways. It speaks of consolidation and implementing concrete steps to upgrade the existing infrastructure.

Most ideas presented in the budget seem people-friendly, but at least one, namely, increasing the Advance Reservation Period from 60 days to 120 days, will not help the public. It is unrealistic in expecting the public to plan 4 months in advance and book tickets. This proposal will be a boon for touts. More significantly, it will pad Railways’ coffers since it will get to keep the money for an additional two months.
