For everyone in Bengaluru who has been avoiding meeting friends in Whitefield because it’s too far from the city, you won’t be able to use that excuse anymore. On Monday, the Bengaluru Division of South Western Railway started operations of their suburban service connecting Whitefield with Baiyyappanahalli and the Bengaluru-Bangarpet-Marikuppam route.
This is good news, especially for the IT sector, which has long demanded better connectivity between Whitefield and the city, reports The New Indian Express.
Earlier in July this year, the Railway Board agreed to a proposal of converting 15 existing short-distance

passenger trains into Mainline Multiple Electric Units (MEMU) with 12 coaches.
The Whitefield – Baiyyappanahalli – Whitefield MEMU began operations from Whitefield on October 16, and from Baiyappanahalli on October 17.
The Marikuppam – KSR Bengaluru – Marikuppam MEMU was launched from KSR Bengaluru on October 16, and from Marikuppam on October 17.
Another service launched on October 16 was the Marikuppam – Bangarpet – Marikuppam MEMU from Marikuppam, which ran from Bangarpet on October 17.
October 18 saw the launch of the Bangarpet – Marikuppam – Bangarpet MEMU from Marikuppam, which ran from Bangarpet on October 19.
All of these MEMUs have replaced the existing Diesel Multiple Electric Unit (DEMU) trains on their routes.
According to the publication, phase 1(A) of the suburban project will cost ₹2,427 crore. The areas it will connect to Bengaluru include Bangarpet, Mandya, Tumkur, and Kempegowda International airport. Officials are still working on the feasibility report for connectivity from Yesvantpur railway station.
Each of these MEMU trains can carry 2,400 passengers and are much faster than the DEMUs. As they run on electricity, they will also help cut down costs for the Railways.

BENGALURU: The suburban rail service for the City is finally set to become a reality. A total of 24 coaches that would be required to ready two trains to kickstart the service have reached Banaswadi from Kapurthala, with the final batch arriving on Thursday. The first pair of MEMUs will run on the Bengaluru and Marikuppam route when operations commence.
The receipt of the coaches at Banaswadi depot from the Rail Coach Factory was independently confirmed by three top officials to Express. A senior official told Express, “We have now got the coaches required to form two Mainline Multiple Electric Unit (MEMU) rakes. We plan to start the first of our proposed suburban services in the first week of October.”
The

first instalment comprising eight coaches arrived on August 20, the second set of eight coaches on September 2 and the final eight coaches came on Thursday, he said. “With each MEMU train set to have 12 coaches, we will now begin the process of readying two trains,” the official said.
“The 24 coaches were procured at a total cost of Rs 66 crore. We will be purchasing a total of 118 coaches with three more 8-coach instalments expected in December or January,” another official said.
The State government has already released Rs 327.79 crore for purchasing coaches as well as another Rs 29.45 crore for upgradation of maintenance facilities for stabling of the MEMU trains at Banaswadi.
How is a MEMU different ?
The present trains along this sector which are always packed have a maximum capacity of 1,800 passengers. “Each of the MEMU trains can carry upto 2,400 passengers. It will be much faster than the conventional rake since the pulling power will be very high. Three engines will propel each of the trains,” the official said. The driver at one end will control all of them.
“Even if there is a failure of one engine, the presence of three engines ensures that the train does not stop its journey midway,” said an operations official. The existing passenger train services running along the Bengaluru-Bangarpet-Marikuppam route will be replaced with the new MEMU pair. MEMUs run on electricity so are more eco-friendly than passenger trains.

with the task of installation of Wi-Fi facility at 400 stations across the country in collaboration with Google, under the Digital India initiative of the Union government.
Presently, free Wi-Fi is available at KRS Bengaluru City, Yeshwantpur, Mysuru, Hubballi, Mangaluru Central, and Kalaburagi stations through RailTel. Belagavi station has got the facility under the MPLAD scheme. With each access point covering up to 40 metres, all platforms, passenger concourse and entrance of the stations are covered, according to South Western Railway’s chief public relations officer E. Vijaya.
In 2017–18, the Railways would provide the facility at Vijayapura, Ballari, Dharwad, Hosapete, and Vasco da Gama (Goa) stations in Hubballi division; Bengaluru Cantonment (to be commissioned shortly), Bangarpet, Kengeri, Krishnarajapuram, and Sri Satya Sai Prasanti Nilayam stations in Bengaluru division; Davangere and Shivamogga Town in Mysuru division, and Mangaluru Junction station in Palakkad division of Southern Railway.
Seventeen more stations would be covered in the next financial year. They are Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Londa, and Toranagallu in Hubballi division; Banaswadi, Hindupur, Hosur, Mandya, Tumakuru, and Yelahanka in Bengaluru division, and Arsikere, Birur, Bhadravathi, Harihar, Haveri and Hassan in Mysuru division.
One can get Internet access with speeds up to 1 Mbps for upload and 3 Mbps for download for the first 30 minutes. Subsequently, the speed reduces to 64 Kbps, but, one could access railway-related sites through WiFi for information such as PNR, and train inquiry, throughout the day.
