Metro as in the Rapid Rail Transit system being built b/w Delhi and Meerut? If that is it, I don't assume it is possible. It can only be done in dense enough population places with people UP/DN between the locations at insane intervals. There is demand on TATA-KGP-HWH route but not that much to run a Rapid Transit system as of now.

As i was going through AMS maps (thanks Anirudh Sir :P) for raigad district, I found this weird MG line running in Raigad district, almost perpendicular to today's KR/CR line
the line starts around Mulshi dam, at some distance below the main mountain range which has Mulshi lake, then runs along a stream that comes from the lake, and the runs alongside Kundalika river before crossing Kolad and then eventually terminating at Roha
Google search throws up nothing of note, although i suspect the line may have had something to do with maintenance

Does anyone have any idea about this line???

This line was constructed by Tata Power Co. and completed in 1921-22.
For aiding the construction work around the Mulshi dam and the Tata power plants, Tata Power Co. laid out two light railways. One between Roha-Bhira and the other between Chinchwad-Mulshi. They also constructed one more railway line between Bhivpuri road and Bhivpuri. The loading gauge of these railways is somewhat ambiguous as some records mention it as meter gauge (like the AMS maps) and some mention it as narrow gauge. The Bhivpuri road branch line alignment is still traceable today.

Both the Roha-Bhira and Chinchwad-Mulshi lines were mostly completed in 1921, but there were floods in that year and many stretches of track had to be relaid.
The Chinchwad-Mulshi line was actually somewhat notorious. In the wake of the flooding caused by the filling of water in the Mulshi dam reservoir, many locals protested against the construction of the dam and resorted to 'violent' Satyagraha. In one incident, the engineer operating a locomotive was shot by one of the protestors.
Both lines were mainly used for transporting freight, but there are some accounts of passenger movement too on the lines. The Chinchwad-Mulshi portion was closed in the 1930's, while the other tracks continued operating for sometime after that.
Another similar track used by the TATAs was the Kamshet-Shirota dam meter gauge line. A diesel rail car used to operate on this section to ferry TATA employees to the dam site. It used to be an active topic of discussion for rail fans about 10 years ago, but I haven't heard about it in recent years.

Road transport was the main factor in the demise of many of the light railway lines. In this case, the lines were chiefly used by Tata employees only and they were laid down as light railways so that the maintenance costs could be kept down and also to ensure a rapid construction.
In the early days of the light railways, the tracks were usually laid alongside existing roads and in cases where there were no roads, the track was laid in such a way that the track-bed could also serve as a road if required. This way they ensured that construction costs were low, as surveys for line alignment and land acquisition issues could be

avoided. Before the advent of faster buses, this also ensured that the light railways had an excellent patronage. But this very idea later spelled doom for almost all the light railways as buses would soon become faster and more convenient than slow, narrow gauge trains.
Out of all of Tata's lines in the area, the Chinchwad-Mulshi line had the best chances of being converted to a regular railway line. But the expansion of the city and the gradual takeover by faster buses, meant that the line saw its prospects of being a popular commercial line, slashed very quickly. Also, while there was a possibility to connect it to the Roha-Bhira line and have a new connection from Pune to Roha, Roha itself was a non-descript town and barring the suburbs of Pune, there wasn't much traffic along the route to justify a passenger railway line.
Once the construction of the dam was completed, the lines were only used as an employee shuttle service and occasionally transporting equipment. Maintaining the entire line with only such low volume of traffic soon became a financial burden. Buses and trucks served the purpose better, and the railway lines were soon abandoned.

Thank you. :)

The Chinchwad-Mulshi line is mentioned in several records of the TATA Power co. and the agitations on the line were the subject of discussion in some contemporary legislative assembly debates. One IRFCA member had tried to track the alignment and posted a few pictures of some ruined culverts in the gallery. But the TATA power co's records are the main source of any available information on the line.

The Roha-Bhira portion is more obscure and while there was some mention of it in the IRFCA groups, and some mentions of the line's gauge on Google, little to no information is available on other details. However, the annual 'Indian Forest administration' reports from the 1920's have some details about these lines as they were chiefly used for transporting wood and fuel to the project sites. I'll gather more details in future visits to the library and share the information here. :)

Thanks for the info. I had asked the same question a few days back, and an online search led me to this page. The end of the line at Roha can be traced to an old jetty that extends into the river. Next to this jetty is an open space, which could have been the railway terminus at Roha. . The location of the terminus at the base of the Mulsi dam cannot be easily determined: lot of development there.
