B.S. Yeddyurappa, MP and national vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, on Saturday flagged off the newly introduced bi-weekly Yeshwantpur-Shivamogga Express train here.
The train would run between Yeshwantpur in Bengaluru and Shivamogga on every Saturday and Sunday. In his inaugural address, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that, in wake of heavy density of commuters between Shivamogga and Bengaluru, the Department of Railways would be requested to run the new bi-weekly train on a daily basis.
Stating that there was a need to strengthen the railway network in the district to promote tourism, Mr. Yeddyurappa
said that he would meet Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu and request him to get the pending railway projects completed expeditiously.
The Union government had announced to establish rail link between Shivamogga and Harihar, conduct a survey for establishing rail link between Shivamogga-Shikaripur-Ranibennur and doubling of the track between Shivamogga and Birur. The Railway Minister would be urged to take up these pending projects at the earliest, he said.
He directed the officials of the Department of Railways to take up the work on the construction of railway underpass near Tunga bridge here to facilitate free vehicular movement there.
It was essential to construct an escalator for the benefit of senior citizens and women passengers at the Shivamogga railway station, he said.
The Union Ministry for Surface Transport had agreed to widen the road connecting Shivamogga with National Highway 4 through Honnali and Harihar, he said.
K.S. Eshwarappa, Leader of the Opposition in Legislative Council, in his address said that during the BJP rule in the Karnataka, the government had agreed to share the cost of the implementation of railway projects and clear the hurdles in land acquisition. The Congress government should continue with the cost-sharing model to ensure speedy completion of railway projects, he said.
Ayanur Manjunath, Member of Rajya Sabha, urged the authorities concerned to initiate steps to construct a VIP lounge at Shivamogga railway station.
He asked the Railway officials to take measures to maintain cleanliness at the railway station.
B.Y. Raghavendra, Shikaripur MLA, and R.K. Siddaramanna and M.B. Bhanuprakash, MLCs, were present.
