The Central Railway has identified 17 spots between Thane and Mumbra section where motormen have to constantly juggle between Direct Current (DC) and Alternate Current (AC) since the conversion early this year. This is slowing down trains in its slow-corridor, causing delays of at least 10 to 15 minutes everyday.
The CR had converted Thane to Kalyan to AC 25kv from 15 kv. But the work between Thane to Kurla and eventually CST did not take off due to lack of funds. This left sections between Thane and Mumbra still on DC, due to which motormen find it difficult to run trains.
you shift from one electrical system you have to lower the pantograph run on neutral for a few seconds and raise it back up when you enter the other electrical system. While we do this we have to ensure that we have now shifted to the corresponding system in the motorcoach as well. So it is very stressful. This happens on 17 spots and there is one section that has very little distance between the switches, one mistake and there might be electrical issue, even a fire,” said a motorman.

central railway now running dual power DC - AC emu rakes between mumbra - thane - cstm bcz of DC strectch. Now kalyan to thane fast line is converted to AC line from DC and from mumbra - thane - cstm slow line is still DC. So all north bound kalyan - kasara - karjat emu rakes is running with dual DC - AC power. It is stressful for all emu trains motermen to raise the pantograph of emu trains between Thane - Mumbra slow line for shifting from one electricity system you have to lower the pantograph neutral for few seconds and raise up the pantograph back it up for enter other electrical system. And work is going for DC – AC conversion between mumbra – thane – cstm strectch after complete than this problem will be solve easily.
