If alternative is there then no problem, but if no alternative, then the whole plan of the passengers will be spoiled. If there is coach missing, then i guess passengers need to be informed ahead. If they themself found it out, then it will be huge upset for them in the last minute.
That some times becomes unavoidable/out of hand...If the coach is found to be unfit to run while maintainence and before shunting to PF,only option is to provide identical replacement or some other one, if that also not available such scenes will look up...
This happens very rarely and they have to start the train so that other passengers can travel.
Have experienced it twice- once in NDLS bound Shramjeevi Express and another time in Bareilly Bound Ala Hazrat Express.
In first case, AC-1 CNF berth was booked but on charting berth was allotted in AC_2 as HA coach did not arrive at LKO from originating station. In second case, had CNF AC-2 berth. However on charting it was berthed in AB (composite coach) and berth was allotted in AC-3 part. When questioned, the authorities replied that the particular coach did not arrive from Zone originating the train - ECR and NR respectively. However, in both cases, managed to get refund of excess fare.
