These trip sheds are used when some long route train coming from another railway zone having loco of another shed is housed. Also is the case when the loco shed has locos to its full capacity, a trip shed is used. As for why trip sheds are present in HWH and SRC - not all trains originating or terminating or going through these stations have loco of HWH or SRC. The railways must have separated these sheds on account of maintaining their records, or some kind of preference. I think.

Loco sheds are not tied specifically to any station and cater to the entire zone whereas Trip sheds are specific to the station. In many cases the loco shed will be quite a distance from the major station ( SBC and KJM diesel shed for example). Especially for stations with a lot of traffic like HWH, MAS etc, moving each and every locomotive to the nearest loco shed will be very time-consuming and also block the incoming traffic. Also, for any locomotive, major maintenance works are carried only by the home shed and not any other shed (an emergency might be an exception), so since only minor maintenance is performed at visiting locations ( like refilling of brake fluids, lubricants etc) and the turn around time is also quick ( few hours usually), having a trip shed attached to the station is better and will not create any additional burden on...

the loco shed or the controllers.

I think that IR was supposed to construct an Electric Loco Shed at Dhanbad but due to unavailability of land, they shifted their location to NSCB Gomoh Jn.
.
.
A Trip Shed is required as it does the job of a "Rain Basera" or Shelter for visiting locos for a night or two. The Home Sheds on the other hands are already packed

with their own locos and act as garages for their maintenance, quick-fix checks, etc. apart from just homing them. Mughalsarai has a dedicated ELS for homing it's WAP-4s and WAM-4s while it's Trip Shed homes WAP-5s and P-7s from Ghaziabad, Gomoh and Howrah.
.
I remember that IRFCA Veteran Member Samit Sir had once told me that Loco Sheds serve routes and not towns. Now Ghaziabad has an ELS that homes electric locos in the Delhi Area while DLI and NDLS have the trip sheds homing GZB and LDH Locos (Both electric and diesel). Now Howrah needs a dedicated ELS/DLS for providing locos to originating ER trains asap. In the same way SRC requires to serve SER trains beginning from HWH New Complex or SRC/SHM :-)
