VELLORE: Rail-rokos by a group of commuters at Walajah Road and Sholinghur Railway stations in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu against the late running of a train allegedly claimed the life of a 40-year-old passenger, who was on his way to Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital (GH) in Chennai for treatment.
The deceased has been identified as Wilson, a native of B Kaspa in Ambur and an employee of a footwear company in the area. He was suffering from diabetes with cellulitis.
Wilson was admitted to Government Hospital in Ambur on December 29
after his sugar level shot up. When his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to the GH.
He and his family boarded Jolarpet Express at Ambur Railway Station around 6am to go to Chennai.
However, the train was delayed by 1.40 minutes following rail-rokos at Walajah Road Railway Station and Sholinghur railway station. The rail-rokos were held to protest against the late running of the Yelagiri Express. Yelagiri Express has been running late by around 40 minutes for the last six months, according to the protesters.
As many as four trains were delayed due to the rail rokos, including Jolarpet Express and Yelagiri Express.
The family of Wilson boarded the train thinking that they would reach Chennai by 9.30am and admit him to GH. But the protests at two places delayed the train. It reached Arakkonam at 10.08am as against the scheduled arrival timing of 7.50am at Arakkonam.
Wilson collapsed before the train reached the Arakkonam railway station. Co-passenger helped his family carry him down from the train. Upon information, a doctor attached to Railway Hospital reached there and examined him. The doctor declared him dead.
"If they reached Chennai on time, he would have survived," said a cop attached to Railway protection Force, Arakkonam, quoting a family member of Wilson.
The body was handed over to his family after postmortem.

The first rail line was from Royapuram to Arcot; it is patronised by at least 2,000 passengers
On a sunny afternoon, a small number of passengers wait for their train at Walajah Road railway station, nearly 30 km from the heart of Vellore city. Little did they know that the station has a story to narrate, one that dates back more than a century. Exactly 160 years ago, though the date of July 1 is contested, with some historians pegging it at late June, a train with 300-odd passengers chugged into the Walajah Road railway station (then known as Arcot) from Madras, scripting a new chapter in the annals of railway history. Today, the station, perhaps one of the oldest in the
country, is stoppage for 16 pairs of trains throughout the day.
At least, 2,000 persons wait on its platforms everyday to undertake a journey. “According to records, the first rail line was from Royapuram to Arcot, which later came to be known as Walajah. The Walajah Road railway station was inaugurated on June 26, 1856,” V. Sriram, historian, said.
Stepping into its 161st year of existence, the station is devoid of any grandeur but has retained its old charm. The architecture of the old structure that houses the office of the station manager and station master stands testimony to its historical significance.
The staff are happy to be part of this landmark station. As K. Ravindranath, station manager, said, “It is a proud feeling to be part of Walajah Road railway station.” He added that the station has been doing good business, with its revenue recording steady increase.
“As of now, the station registers average revenue of Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. two lakh per day,” he said.
