No Sir. WDM3D's are geared only for 120kmph. You can check the product brochure from DLW - click here and a google search will turn up many RDSO documents which also show the tractive effort charts and other specifications for the loco. All ALCO's except the WDP3A are geared for a maximum speed of 120kmph. (All the WDM class have the same gear ratio). Another related document - click here I am not sure what was the exact source of the 160 kmph number. (I myself erroneously quoted that number a few times on this forum before I found out my mistake). In the past one member had mentioned this as the MPS after watching a Youtube video which showed the... more...
speedometer in a WDM3D loco jump to 160kmph due to wheel slip (The loco itself was moving at normal speed, but the speedometer went haywire due to the wheel slip). That could have been a source for this incorrect information.
Exactly sir, you got it right. I saw 160 kmph in that exact same wheelslip video. Thanks a ton for the correction. BTW what's the max rated speed of WDP-3A (or 3AM)? Is it the fastest ALCO in IR network ?
They are rated for 160kmph (The bogies used in these locos were designed for 180kmph) and even received CRS certification for operating with LHB rakes at these speeds. However, the Toasters suffered from serious oscillations (probably not a safety related issue, but more of a ride quality issue), so they never actually did this in practice.
